A Powersports client was experiencing an issue with plastic melting near the muffler of their product. They needed a heat deflection and shielding solution to prevent plastic from melting, without a costly redesign and additional parts. They came to Industrial Custom Products for an efficient and cost-effective Thermal Shielding solution.
The Challenge
The client had already attempted several solutions, but none were effective at preventing melting. There was already heat deflection material in place to help mitigate heat; however, there were grommets in the part that required mechanical fasteners to hold it in place. Additionally, after operating at high RPMs and then sitting, there was enough heat migrating through the grommets & fasteners to cause the plastic on the outside to melt.
Our Solution
ICP recommended testing out higher-performing heat deflection materials while also eliminating the need for grommets & mechanical fasteners by switching to a 3M VHB tape with higher heat resistance for assembly. This solution created a thermal shield, that deflected heat from the plastic parts.
