TPO (Thermoplastic Poly Olefin) is an excellent option for plastic fabrication where stiffness, weather-ability and chemical resistance are all key. Here’s what you need to know about TPO, and its benefits in thermoforming.
What is TPO?
TPO (Thermoplastic Poly Olefin) is a compounded alloy of polypropylene, elastomers and mineral fillers offering a unique balance of stiffness and thermal expansion. TPO has superior weather-ability so it does not require a cap and it ranks extremely high on impact and chemical resistance(1).
The added weather-ability makes TPO extremely useful for recreational vehicle applications, such as exterior panels, hoods or roofs.
Industrial Custom Products partners with Simona PMC to source the highest quality TPO available.
Features of TPO
TPO is available in a wide variety of different combinations, to customize performance based on application. Additionally, as a thermoplastic TPO can be further customized with color, finish and adhesives to create a unique design.
Popular TPO Options
There are numerous TPO options available. Below are the three most popular, and generally suited for most exterior applications.
PremierCap® – Available in low, mid and high gloss top options with scratch and mar resistance. Often used for heavy truck cab exteriors, electrical housings, cargo haulers, automotive electronics and computer components.
ONTEX® – A multi-layered solution that is ready to paint and directly bondable. Often used for bumpers, wheel lips, valences, claddings, rocker panels and industrial covers/enclosures.
Exultra® – Very low-gloss with soft-touch and outdoor weatherable. Often used for interior & exterior panels, dashes, consoles, covers and shrouds.
Benefits of TPO
As a compound, TPO offers several benefits over other mono-material plastics. Regardless of the mix of the specific TPO, every TPO offers the following benefits:
- Durability
- Less than half the CLTE (Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion) of ABS and 75% lower than Polyethylene
- Sound deadening characteristics
- Cold Weather Performance
- High melt strength
- Recyclability
- Custom colors, finishes and decorations
- Specialized grades
- Protection and outdoor weather-ability
