Closed cell sponge gaskets are critical parts that are used for a variety of applications where sealing is the primary goal. But how do they work? And what are their uses?
What are a Closed Cell Sponge Gaskets?
Closed cell sponge gaskets can be made from several materials, but generally it’s silicone, rubber, neoprene, or an EPDM/SBR blend.

No matter the material used, the form is the same – a structure of non-interconnecting cells that contain air. When force is applied, this allows the air to be slowly released. When the pressure is removed, the closed cell sponge gasket can then draw back in air and return to the original shape.
The decision on what material to use depends on the desired use of the part and any required tolerances– such as heat, moisture resistance, or compression set resistance.
